BEHIND THE BOOK
Living through COVID-19, and hearing every conspiracy theory that came with it, set my imagination running. In April 2023, I started sketching the story as a limited TV series. Without a track record, though, I knew that would be a hard pitch. So I took the deep dive and wrote it as a near-future conspiracy thriller instead.
I pulled ideas from real-life headlines and let my imagination take over from there. I love a good suspense story, and I care just as much about the characters caught inside it. My own background shaped both of my leads. Years in communications gave me Bill Archer, a corporate communications executive whose job is shaping the message. My long-ago days as a small-market TV reporter gave me Erica Walker, a journalist determined to find out what that message is hiding.
I also wanted to include just a drop of my Catholic faith. St. Jude is the patron saint of impossible causes, and that felt like the right name for a story about ordinary people taking on an impossible fight.
